What to do after disappointing mock exam results.
A bad mock exam feels bigger than it is. Here is a calm, practical way to read the result, talk to your child about it, and turn it into a plan for the week ahead -- without a full revision overhaul and without pretending it did not happen.
Cool off first
Give it a few hours before any conversation about the result. A mock score straight off the page is a fact, not a feeling you need to react to yet.
Read the result as data, not a verdict
A mock is a snapshot of where your child is right now, several weeks before the exam board sees a single answer. It is not a prediction of the final grade.
Find out where the marks actually went
Most lost marks come from a small number of repeatable causes: running out of time, misreading the question, or a gap in exam technique rather than knowledge. A proper mistake log makes this visible in minutes.
Turn it into one plan for one week
Not a full revision overhaul. A short, specific plan for the seven days after a mock is enough to change the next result.
The conversation that actually helps
Start by naming the feeling before the fix: “I can see this is disappointing” goes further than jumping straight to a study plan. Once your child feels heard, the practical part is much easier -- go through the paper together, name where marks were lost, and agree on two or three specific things to change this week. Not ten. Two or three.
Praise the process, not the outcome: noticing effort and specific improvements (“you answered every question this time”) builds more resilience than comments about ability or the grade itself.
If it feels like more than a bad result
Occasionally a disappointing mock brings up more than frustration -- real overwhelm about exams in general. If that is what you are seeing, a study plan is not the right first tool. Talk to a form tutor, school counsellor, or GP, and come back to the mock result itself later.
